What is Polio?

Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. It can cause permanent paralysis (usually of the legs). The virus lives in the throat and intestines of an infected person. The virus is spread mainly through the faecal-oral route or, less commonly, by droplets in the nose or mouth from breathing or talking. It multiplies in the intestine and is then spread through the faeces into pools of contaminated water or soil. The virus can remain potent for many.
